The orchards need you
By sponsoring an orchard tree today you can bring nature and fresh fruit into the heart of a community for generations to come.
Your gift will help The Orchard Project to work with an urban community to prepare, create and then care for a community orchard. It will help us to prepare the ground, pay for the tree, cover the costs of planting it and train up the group with traditional orcharding skills to look after it as it delivers fruit year after year.
You can sponsor a tree as an individual, family or dedicate it to someone you love.
We’ve lost 95% of our orchards in Britain in the last 100 years but The Orchard Project is bringing them back, along with the skills and traditions that come with them, right into our towns and cities. By sponsoring an orchard tree you will be helping us to bring orchards to these urban areas and helping people, young and old, reconnect with their food, their outdoors and each other.
By sponsoring a tree, you’ll be planting nothing short of a legacy, helping us take a step towards our vision of a country where everyone is within easy reach of their own community orchard.

The stages of planting a new tree
These photos were taken at a recent planting day in Hackney. A team of volunteers came together to plant 12 fruit trees in the gardens of St John church. These are the steps the team took.
The cost of planting an orchard
It takes time and money to create a vibrant and thriving community orchard with a community group that has the skills and knowledge to care for it long-term. Our unique orchard model means we train and support groups over years to nurture and grow their orchards and embed that orchard in their community.
It’s a long-term investment, meaning the orchard has the best chance of still being here in decades to come.
Each orchard is unique but here is an average breakdown of the approximate costs of a community orchard, to show how your gift will be used:
Approximate costs for creating a community orchard of 20 trees
|Our orchard project managers working with the community to help prepare for and create the orchard and train and support the group||
|20 Trees and tree support materials
Includes mulch, protectors, wire mesh, stakes
|Other planting and features to enrich and support the orchard
Includes plants to attract and support pollinators and pest-controlling insects, system plants for supporting the soil, fruit bushes for early fruit, benches and signs
|Travel costs, training expenses and volunteer expenses||
|Local promotion to build engagement and reach the wider community||
|The wider cost of ongoing support for this and other orchards in our growing orchard movement
Includes orchard networking, outreach, advice, newsletters, information
Sponsor the ongoing planting of orchard trees: £18.85 per month.
You’ll help us cover the costs of the tree, other plants and orchard features, the tree protection and the time and skills to make to happen.
If you gift aid your donation, then we’ll use the extra to involve the wider community and build the orcharding movement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I know which tree I have sponsored?
We can’t tell you the specific tree your sponsorship has paid for. However, we will update you on the planting projects and orchards your sponsorship will have helped to create.
Additionally, we’ll tell you how trees are progressing and share news on blossoming, maintenance, harvesting and other milestones in the orchard’s development.
How will my sponsorship be used?
We will use your sponsorship to pay for planting days and the on-going upkeep of orchards.
In the (unlikely) event that funds from sponsoring a tree exceed the costs of planting and maintaining the orchards we work with, then we will use any excess funds to build new projects, run other existing projects and cover our general running costs.
I don’t like direct debits. Can I make a one off donation?
Direct debits are easier to track and cost less for us to process but we understand they are not for everyone. If you would like to make an annual gift instead you can do so here.
How long does tree sponsorship last for?
Sponsorship lasts for as long as your direct debit is active. It takes around five years from planting for a tree to produce its first harvest, so we’ll hope you’ll make a long-term commitment and the longer you sponsor a tree the more orchards we can create.
If you make a one-off gift, then tree sponosorship will last for one year from your gift.
Can I sponsor a tree jointly or as a family?
Yes. It’s the same price for an individual or a family. Just let us know when you sign up who your tree sponsorship is for.
Can an orchard group sponsor a tree?
Absolutely. We would love you to. It’s the same as for an individual – just let us know your group’s dedication.
Can I sponsor a whole orchard?
Of course. Full sponsorship for a whole orchard costs £508 per month or just over £6,000.
It can be a great way for companies or community groups to get involved.
Please get in touch with Neil or Kath, our job-share co-CEOs (email@example.com) if you’d like to discuss this option.
