Today we launch a new chapter in our journey to plant and preserve community orchards across our urban landscapes. Our cider team has changed its food-waste reduction mission this year. Through a new partnership with well-established, carbon-negative cidery, Hawkes, the apple donation scheme we previously ran in London, is now able to expand nationally. On top of that, you’ll be able to donate to us and support the preservation of orchards, just by buying a pint of cider! How’s that for a win-win? Read on to find out more.
Since 2016, we’ve trained and worked with over 1300 volunteers to produce our community-powered craft cider and apple juice. We’ve rescued 32 tonnes of surplus fruit that may have otherwise been left to rot, and turned it into our delicious, unique products. Now, we’re joining forces with fellow food waste warrior, Hawkes, to reduce the nation’s ‘fruit waste’ even further.
Hawkes cidery uses supermarket surplus and reject fruit to press its cider as a standard. Its strong commitment to reducing food waste and inspiring others to do the same makes Hawkes a perfect partner for The Orchard Project. Like us, their team are passionate about urban opportunities for apple growing and consumption, engaged with local communities, and dedicated to inspiring – and growing – the next generation of orchard and cider enthusiasts.
For this year’s harvest, your donated apples will go into their flagship cider, Urban Orchard. For every 3kg of apples donated direct to the cidery in Bermondsey, Hawkes will give you a can of its Urban Orchard cider! For donations sent in via the delivery service on their website, you will receive a voucher for half a pint. See below for more details.
Drink and donate
As their charity partner, for every pint of Urban Orchard cider sold in BrewDog bars across the UK over the next 12 months, Hawkes will make a donation to us. The funds raised will also be used to create more wildlife-friendly, climate-resilient orchards and food forests, as well as opportunities for people of all backgrounds to enjoy them and get involved in caring for them.
So why not find your nearest BrewDog bar, get out there and raise a toast to orchard wildlife!
What about Local Fox?
Fret not! – Local Fox, our own flagship craft cider product, remains as foxy as ever! You can still purchase it from any of our stockists (listed here, wherever you are in the country – online delivery available!).
Want to donate your spare apples? – Here’s how:
Either bring your apples to Hawkes Cidery at 86-92 Druid Street, Bermondsey SE1 2HQ Monday – Friday 9-5 or Saturday & Sunday 12-8 or send them for free in the post! Visit wearehawkes.com/appledonors to find out more.
For every 3kg of apples donated directly to the cidery in Bermondsey, Hawkes will give you a can of its Urban Orchard cider! For donations sent in the post you will receive a voucher for a half-pint of Urban Orchard cider via email after the campaign ends in October, which you’ll be able to redeem in BrewDog bars nationwide.
The more apples you donate, the more cider made, and ultimately, the more trees The Orchard Project is able to plant!
