What could be better enjoying than a delicious drink of handcrafted, community-made, locally sourced cider, while reducing food waste at the same time?
Not many beverages can claim to be upskilling the local community and rescuing London’s neglected fruit. And few have the unique surprise element that our Local Fox cider boosts: each fermenting batch is pressed from a different combination of apples, dependant on the lottery of fruit donations received that week.
But our innovative Community Cider Hub and its scrumptious products are now under threat as funding streams come to an end. Today, we launch a Crowdfunding campaign to keep it alive. Can you help us continue rescuing surplus fruit from rot?
Here are four reasons to support our Crowdfunder:
- The fruit we use is collected from gardens, orchards and supply chains in London – 100% local; no air miles.
- We’ve trained nearly 700 volunteers in harvesting, pressing and bottling, while raising awareness about food waste.
- Every part of the process, from crushing and pressing to bottling and labelling, is done by hand, using traditional methods. This makes it a unique, craft brew.
- We give back tools and training in fruit tree care to the community orchards who share their surplus with us, which helps to improve London’s green spaces.
Since its inception, the Local Fox Cider hub has rescued over 12 tonnes of unwanted fruit from London’s gardens, orchards and supply chains, and transformed this into 15,000 bottles of cider and juice. It’s amazing what a little bit of yeast and a lot of enthusiastic food-waste-hero-volunteers can do!
We need to raise £17,500 to continue this fantastic food waste reduction initiative. Please go to www.crowdfunder.co.uk/localfox to find out more and donate.
We would really appreciate any support you can offer in spreading the word to your friends and community groups, so please do share on social media (@ProjectOrchard).
Thank you from all of us at The Orchard Project… and our dedicated volunteers!
