Hard Graft

March is the month for propagating fruit trees by bench grafting. We collected apple “scions” (one year old shoots) when we were pruning in January and February, and grafted them on to rootstock using the whip and tongue method.

  • In London, Lewis, Ella and Stephanie ran 7 workshops across the city teaching around 50 people this ancient skill, and we now have 50 newly grafted trees at Hackney Community Tree Nursery
  • In Manchester Dan will be aiming to graft 400 new trees this month with 20 volunteers
  • In Leeds Alan is trialling a community nursery with 300 trees. Two pepole he trained last year have run their own workshops this year!
  • Check out our online guide to grafting.
