A group of lucky Swansea residents who won £1m from the People’s Postcode Lottery happen to live just minutes away from a community orchard.
Over the last five years we’ve planted and restored a network of 32 community orchards across the city, engaging over 2,000 people in orchard training and events. And one of these – North Hill Community Garden – is located at the end of the winning street!
The Millionaire Street win also means extra funding for a range of local charities, including The Orchard Project.
A generous donation of £50k from the Postcode Community Trust will enable us to support existing orchards across the city and help train communities to set up even more.
Abby Cremin, Head of Operations and Programmes, said: “This incredible support from People’s Postcode Lottery ensures that we will be able to plant and care for more orchards across the city this year, and train at least 100 new volunteers to care for them, while continuing to support our existing network of orchard groups to build skills and confidence.”
The funding will also give a boost to our work with schools in Swansea, South Wales. Helping children connect with nature and learn where their food comes from is a really important part of what we do, so it’s great to be able to invest more in this vital work.
