You can make the most of the vertical space in an orchard to create additional habitats by underplanting with edible, nectar-rich, structural or nitrogen fixing plants. If there is space, you could plant additional fruit and nut trees. This is particularly important if you have any older trees that are showing signs of ageing (veteran trees). In this case, choose trees that are the same species to ensure continuity of habitat for the current invertebrate inhabitants.
To create a longer lasting and more diverse habitat, some of the new trees should be on vigorous rootstock. This complex mosaic of ecosystems, creating by adding more plants, will make your orchard much more resilient to the challenges caused by climate change.
