CALLING ALL MANCHESTER ORCHARD FOLK
We’ve just been permitted last minute access to Kenworthy Woods Orchard and these poor trees haven’t been pruned in years. It’s time to give the stone fruits some much needed attention.
Some locals are aware we’ve been assisting in the establishment of a new ‘friends of’ group to manage this space in the long term. While we have core funding, tools and staff time available we’ll be on hand to co-manage the space. We’re nearly there with the background work of getting the new group constituted, a bank account and the all important Public Liability Insurance. So expect regular work days in the months and years ahead and if we met you at last year’s Apple Day at Unicorn you’d be especially welcome!
TRAIN WITH THE EXPERTS
On the day we’ll be joined by expert fruit tree pruner Mark Simmonds from Fruit Culture (pictured below) who will go over the theory of summer pruning for the first hour. This will be indoors at the visitor centre next to the car park at Chorlton Water Park. We’ll then head over to the orchard to give the trees a much needed trim and start the process of orchard restoration.
WHAT TO BRING
Please bring a packed lunch, wet weather gear if raining and comfortable clothing. Wellies may be a good idea if it’s not too roasting.
Refreshments will be provided.
P.S. THERE’S MORE GOOD NEWS FOR KENWORTHY WOODS
Good news too is that The Orchard Project have won a funding bid for creating biodiversity measures in Kenworthy Woods from The Dulverton Trust. So we’ll be adding to, complimenting and creating an amazing home for the diverse wildlife that lives in and around this orchard in the coming months. Let alone the local humans who like to use its produce. Watch this space for more info on this exciting project.
