Saving the world one unloved piece of fruit at a time
Since 2016, The Orchard Project, the only national charity dedicated to the creation and restoration of community orchards, and its growing band of volunteers have been on a mission. Through our juice and cider enterprise, we have rescued 9 tonnes of apples, by 2019 we hope to grow this to 40 tonnes of unloved apples!
The movement is expanding quickly and we’re struggling to keep up. You won’t be surprised to hear that we’ve rapidly outgrown our current premises and facilities.
Over the next 6 months, we need to raise £50,000 so that our juicing enterprise can continue – we have ambitions to grow, work with at least 300 volunteers per year and continue to tackle food waste across the capital. Without this funding, we will have to close our doors in 2019 and our production will cease.

How can you help?
Will you be one of our caring supporters who will help save this project? There are lots of easy ways to get involved:
- make an in-kind donation
- support our crowdfunding campaign in exchange for a great reward (this launches in late October)
- a fundraising activity at your workplace, such as a dress down day or apple themed fun
- do a sponsored run, cycle or another challenge
- asking your friends for donations for your birthday rather than presents (our trustee Ozoda has already done this on Facebook and raised over £400!)
- simply help us spread the word by sharing our e-flyer on social media
Any contribution that you can make will help us to work towards our goal and we will be extremely grateful

Our community-based model
The way we operate is surprisingly simple but completely different to anybody else making cider and juice.
So far, we’ve given back 1,700 litres of cider and juice along with tools and training to community orchards and individuals who donated apples.
We have held 39 community days for people to participate in harvesting, pressing, bottling and labelling. 490 volunteers were involved in these community activities and 21 community orchards are involved with the project.
So why not go commercial?
We could’ve taken the easy route and taken this commercial, scaling up our operation and mechanising processes so that we’d be more profitable. However, we want to create something bigger and bolder, more community focussed, with nature, sustainability and social good at its core.
That’s why we’ve decided to fundraise and crowdfund to raise the money needed for the expansion and running of the project.
Quite simply, we don’t want to sacrifice our social outcomes for short-term profit.
With your help we can keep everything that makes the current set-up special – the volunteering, the fun, the community give back, the sustainability – and produce over 10,000 litres of juice and cider a year.
In return, you’ll get the warm glow of being part of an amazing project, where people and purpose come before profit. Of course, we’ll share some of the fruits of our labour with you at the end of it!
About the project – creating a community hub to be proud of
So what exactly will you be funding?
Your donation will create a community hub in Walthamstow. This will be the home of Local Fox, London’s community cider made from 100% London apples.
From the hub, we will run our cider press, where volunteers and our team will turn the apples in juice and cider for sale across the capital (and beyond). Every part of the process – pressing, bottling, labelling – will be conducted by hand at the hub.
In the long run, we hope to open a tap room where people will be invited to do tastings, meet the team and have tours of the press.
We expect to recruit and train over 300 volunteers a year in every aspect of production.
