How to Chop-down in a Lockdown: Winter Pruning Advice (from a distance)

Despite lockdowns restrictions and tiers (or tears?), we still want to support you in gaining the skills and confidence to prune your fruit tree this winter. We’ve put together a list of our best in-house resources, links to books, videos and other tips for when you can safely get out outside and prune your trees.

1. We recently updated our *FREE* Orchard Leader Handbook. Usually reserved for handing out in person we’re now making this resource freely available for download. It’s just had a mini overhaul and covers the basics when it comes to orchard care. Especially pruning and grafting which we’re sure you’re thinking about already.

2. If you want to dig a little deeper and really advance your pruning skills, we highly recommend Chloe Ward’s fantastic book: ‘How to prune an Apple Tree – a guide for real people with imperfect trees’.
It’s a good price, a short read and nicely presented too! bit.ly/chloewardbook

3. Mark Simmond’s from Fruit Culture was due to co-host our annual winter pruning of the ‘Award Winning’ community orchard at Platt Fields Park in Manchester. Then the January lockdown kicked in, and unfortunately we had to defer. However, Mark has given us permission to share his virtual pruning workshop (held with and recorded by the Lancashire Wildlife Trust). This is a fascinating two hours watch, so grab your popcorn and hold-off Netflix for a night! It’s *FREE* to view over on Facebook. Just click the link: bit.ly/fruitculturepruning

4.  Even better, you can join our own live event on fruit tree care and pruning, delivered by Edinburgh Project Manager, Chris. This introductory refresher session will have lots of useful tips and tricks for winter orchard care and pruning. Date for your diary: Tuesday 23rd Feb, 7pm on Zoom.

*BONUS CONTENT* COMING SOON.

We’re planning on releasing some bonus pruning content, created by our Glasgow project manager, Fergus (pictured below). Due to adverse weather conditions these recording are ‘pending’. So watch this space and we’ll release these at a later date.
